Creativity in Education

I found the video very interesting and at the same time so true. It is so important to develop on children creativeness, innovation but for that there must be a change in the way how people think, there has to be spaces where students can create. For instance, and how the author said, in school the subjects that are more important are those where there isn’t much imagination like Math, Language, Science but what happen to the other ones like art, dance or music, what happen to those students that are good at those ones and that will like to make a living for that, well most of the times they can’t.
Another thing that I found amazing is when he said that kids aren’t frightened to be wrong but when they get older they lose their capacity they are afraid because people that are incorrect are stigmatized. So as teachers we have to try to make students not to be afraid of being wrong and also we need to give students a space to use their imagination, to be innovators.

  1. Nice comment Vale. I think some of this goes back to something Berni mentioned in class about language learning and her being a risk-taker with the language. I think we need to teach students that they can take risks without them feeling they will be ridiculed or punished for being wrong (or only partially correct).
This is why assessment is such a big issue. Students who take tests or evaluations where the answers is only right or wrong are being sent an erroneous message about learning. In research people learn just as much from failed hypotheses as they do from successful ones. Obviously, it isn’t always that simple but learning a language isn’t the same as learning other subjects. We need to motivate our learners to keep looking for the “right way” without getting de-motivated by their failures.

  2. I couln't aree more with both. Yes, there must be a change in the way people think, everybody says that education is not the same as 20 or even 10 years ago, and I agree, but the expectations people have, are still the same rotten ones! And that leads me to what Simon said, assessment plays a big role in the way education is nowadays,we need to come up with better ways to evaluate and prove students, parents, and schools that creativity can also be pursued at schools and what great results we could all get from that ( students mainly). I wouln't like to skip on another thought, "effort" as teachers we rarely evaluate that, and I think it makes a difference. Trying is good! Even if we don't get the expected results. In Chile we are not used to that, it is called a waste of time, but behind trying there is motivation, and what a great thing is that!
